The R8 sits on an aluminum space frame — roughly four-fifths aluminum castings, extrusions and sheet — and a strap tightened against a sill or an underbody rail deforms it permanently, so R8s go down on wheel straps with nothing hooked to the structure. Static clearance is around 100 mm and the carbon splitter hangs ahead of the front axle line, which makes the ramp crest and the break-over point the limit rather than approach angle alone. Hydraulic nose-lift systems raise the front axle by up to about 45 mm and stay available to roughly 80 km/h, but they bleed down once the ignition is off, so the car is positioned and chocked flat before the system settles back onto the splitter. Lacquered carbon sideblades and mirror caps chip; they travel under soft film, never adhesive tape on paint. quattro drivetrains rule out dolly towing and flat towing, so a non-runner goes on with all four wheels turning or on skates. RS and S models with adaptive air suspension self-level and drop roughly 20 mm — loaded at full height they settle overnight and slacken the straps, which are re-tensioned at every stop.
